Scientific and ethical approval
A researcher wishing to carry out a study at IDI goes through a three-tier system of scientific and ethical review as required by the national research guidlines. The IDI has a Scientific Review Committee (SRC) that:
- Scrutinises the research proposal before forwarding it to the Ethics Committee, which in turn recommends it to the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology (UNCST) for final approval
- Reviews and evaluates all research projects involving IDI
- Monitors the progress of research projects annually
- Periodically reviews IDI policies on research
- Keeps a record of submissions and decisions.
The UNCST:
- Conducts annual continuing review and monitoring of research sites
- Oversees activities of institutional review boards
- Provides policy guidance and issues research guidelines
- Maintains a database of research projects done in Uganda
